The man killed in a weekend crash on Interstate 5 north of Torrey Pines was publicly identified Monday as a 52-year-old National City resident.

Oscar Miguel Melero had stopped his BMW in traffic in the northbound lanes north of Del Mar Heights Road, when it was struck by a sedan traveling at freeway speeds shortly after 7 a.m. Sunday, according to the California Highway Patrol and the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Medics attempted to revive Melero, but he died inside an ambulance, officials with the Medical Examiner’s Office said.

The other motorist involved in the crash was taken to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla to be treated, a San Diego Fire-Rescue Department dispatcher said.
