A light-rail passenger train struck and killed a pedestrian near Palomar College Wednesday morning.
The woman apparently was trying to cross the tracks near Pacific Street and West Mission Avenue in San Marcos when the eastbound Sprinter tram hit her shortly after 6 a.m., according to San Diego County Sheriff’s officials.
Railroad crossing gates were down and warning lights and bells activated at the time, Deputy Anthony Radicia said.
The woman, who appeared to be about 30 years old but was not immediately identified, died at the scene, Radicia said.
The fatality delayed rail service in the area by roughly an hour.
The 22-mile Sprinter line is operated by the North County Transit District and runs from Oceanside to Escondido.
