A fight in an East County desert neighborhood escalated Wednesday afternoon into a stabbing and an apparently intentional residential fire, leaving two men injured.
The fracas in the 1000 block of Palm Canyon Drive in Borrego Springs was reported shortly after 4 p.m., according to sheriff’s officials.
As deputies arrived, one of the combatants retreated into his nearby trailer home and locked himself inside, Lt. Jim Walker said. Flames then began spreading through the residence, prompting one of the patrol personnel to break in and pull the man to safety.
Medics took the resident to a hospital for treatment of significant burns, Walker said.
Deputies detained the other involved man, who had suffered less serious injuries, at the scene and were questioning him.
It was not immediately clear which of the two had been stabbed. The reason for the fight also was unknown.
