A driver attempting to escape an overnight checkpoint in Escondido led police officers on a roughly 40-minute chase that ended in a crash and a bite from a police dog.
The driver, whose name was not immediately available, was one of the more than 2,700 who passed through the checkpoint on West Grand Avenue near West Second Avenue, according to Escondido police Lt. Justin Murphy.
But Murphy said that driver sped off after refusing to hand over a license. Officers pursued the suspect’s vehicle for about 40 minutes before the driver crashed his car and tried to run off.
The suspect was captured with the help of a police dog and was arrested on suspicion of felony evading and driving on a suspended license, Murphy said.
The checkpoint also led to the arrest of one suspected drunken driver and 49 citations issued for various violations, Murphy said.
