A casual dining restaurant’s back office near the Carlsbad Premium Outlets was robbed at gunpoint early Sunday, while its patrons were unaware.

Shortly after 1:30 a.m., the robber confronted the manager and kitchen staff at TGI Fridays on Palomar Airport Road near Paseo del Norte and demanded access to the safe, Carlsbad police Sgt. Scott Meritt said. He took an undisclosed amount, along with cash and items belonging to the employees, and ran off before police arrived.

Meritt said the customers in the dining room, which was open until 2 a.m., were not aware the restaurant’s back office was being robbed.

Police described the suspect as black, and between 20 and 30 with average build. He was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, used a white bandana to cover his face and was armed with a chrome or silver semiautomatic pistol.

Meritt asked anyone with additional information on the robbery to call (760) 931-2197.
