A 32-year-old man died and a woman was in custody after a shooting at a residence on the Barona Indian Reservation on Friday.

It happened about 12:05 p.m. with Barona Tribal Enforcement receiving a call of an attempted suicide, and a report about the same time to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department by a woman saying her child was dead, sheriff’s Homicide Lt. John Maryon said.

Maryon said a tribal enforcement officer responded to a residence on the 1500 block of Quincy Canyon Road, where he spoke to an adult male outside the house.

The male went back into the house and a gunshot was heard, Maryon said, and a woman left the house, carrying a shotgun. The woman walked away from the house and dropped the weapon on a dirt road.

The male victim died at the scene from a gunshot wound to the chest, Maryon said.

The woman was detained, but had not yet been charged, Maryon said.

Maryon said a search of the residence revealed no trace of the alleged deceased child, nor any other victims or suspects.

A SWAT team and crisis negotiators were sent to the location and nearby Barona Charter School was briefly locked down before the female suspect was arrested, sheriff’s spokeswoman Melissa Aquino said.
