A San Marcos man was in jail Monday on suspicion of beating, choking and raping a woman at a North County strip mall over the weekend.
A caller reported the alleged assault in the 900 block of West San Marcos Boulevard shortly before 9:30 p.m. Sunday.
“A 911 operator overheard a disturbance inside the business over the open phone line and updated responding deputies,” sheriff’s Lt. Jeffrey Duckworth said.
A woman told arriving patrol personnel that a man had attacked and sexually assaulted her, at one point punching her dog when the animal tried to protect her, the lieutenant said.
Deputies detained the alleged perpetrator, 27-year-old Jason Edward Stay, and took him in for questioning and summoned medics to transport the woman to a hospital for treatment of various injuries. Stay was booked into the county jail in Vista on suspicion of a slate of felony charges, including rape, assault, burglary and animal cruelty. He was being held on $300,000 bail pending arraignment, scheduled for Wednesday afternoon.
