A 20-year-old man robbed and threatened to carjack a driver as the second man was picking up his girlfriend near the U.S.-Mexico border, police said Sunday. But the suspect and a 23-year-old accomplice were arrested.
One of the suspects walked up to the 19-year-old victim’s car in the 4400 block of Camino de la Plaza, near Via Nacional, shortly before 11 p.m. Saturday. He raised his jacket as if he had a gun and demanded cash, San Diego police Officer Robert Heims said.
The driver said he had no money to give, but suspect goaded him into handing over two cell phones, Heims said. But that was apparently not enough.
The man got into the victim’s passenger seat, rummaged through the car and demanded additional items, Heims said. He repeatedly told the victim he would take his car if he refused to give up more of his property.
The two suspects ran off as the victim’s girlfriend was walking from her nearby workplace toward the car, but were later arrested, Heims said. No suspects’ name were immediately available.
