The driver of a stolen SUV led law enforcement officers on a chase from near the border to downtown San Diego, where he ditched the vehicle and hid in a hotel before being arrested.

Deputies attempted to pull over the blue Honda SUV in the vicinity of Otay Mesa and La Media roads shortly after 10 a.m. because it was stolen, but the driver failed to yield for officers, according to San Diego police and the county sheriff’s department.

A sheriff’s department helicopter tracked the SUV to downtown San Diego, sheriff’s Lt. Mike Muncie said.

The driver stopped near the Manchester Grand Hyatt around 10:25 a.m. and bolted from the car, leaving a passenger behind, according to San Diego police Officer Frank Cali. That person was taken into custody.

Police and other law enforcement officers searched the area for the suspect, and found him in a room in the upscale hotel at the foot of Market Street shortly before noon, police and sheriff’s officials said.
