A naked man found walking on Interstate 8 amid frigid temperatures Wednesday was taken into custody by police, a California Highway Patrol officer said.

The incident in westbound lanes near Severin Drive was called in at 11:11 a.m., CHP officer Tommy Doerr said.

Officers arrived and took taking him into custody about 11:30 a.m.

“He was transported to County Mental Health for evaluation,” Doerr said.

Doerr said there was a solo crash reported nearby, but he said he did not know if the man was associated with the wreck.

Under California law, the man, whose name was withheld, could be hospitalized involuntarily for up to 72 hours if deemed a danger to himself or others.
