The 21-year-old driver of a high-end sports racer killed in a crash with an SUV in Rancho Santa Fe Christmas Eve was publicly identified Saturday.

Barry Alexander Moores of Rancho Santa Fe lost control of the Ariel Atom sports car, a distinctive street-legal racer designed in Great Britain, and spun into a 2006 Ford Expedition in the 4400 block of La Orilla shortly after 2 p.m. Wednesday, according to the county Medical Examiner’s Office and the California Highway Patrol.

The UC Berkeley student was the nephew of philanthropist and ex-Padres owner John Moores, U-T San Diego reported.

Moores suffered major injuries in the crash and was airlifted to a hospital, authorities said. He was declared dead shortly before 4 p.m. Thursday, according to a Medical Examiner’s Office investigator.

His passenger, a 21-year-old Mira Mesa man, sustained major injuries in the crash, CHP Officer Jim Bettencourt said.

The 62-year-old San Diego man driving the SUV and his female passenger were hospitalized following the crash with minor to moderate injuries, Bettencourt said.
