The victim, described only as an Asian man, summoned Emmanuel Patino as both were driving toward each other in the 500 block of Gold Drive near Vandergrift Boulevard around 11:40 p.m. Tuesday, said Oceanside police Lt. Leonard Cosby.
Patino told police the man appeared to have blood on his hands as he asked for help, saying he had been shot, according to the lieutenant. But as Patino was dialing 911, the wounded motorist drove his black Ford Mustang toward Vandergrift Boulevard.
A subsequent search failed to find him, and police notified officials at Camp Pendleton, neighboring law enforcement agencies and hospitals to be on the lookout for a shooting victim, Cosby said.
The other motorist jotted down the Mustang’s California license plate number, but the car’s registered owner no longer lived at the address linked to the plates and did not leave a forwarding address.
Cosby asked anyone with information on the victim or the vehicle to call police at (760) 435-4911.
