A man who allegedly assaulted a motorist and stole his vehicle on a Grant Hill-area roadside late Thursday afternoon was arrested a short time later.
The victim was sitting in his stationary Jeep Cherokee in the 2500 block of L Street about 4:15 p.m. when the assailant, a bald man who appeared to be in his 30s, confronted him and began punching him in the face, according to San Diego police.
The victim was able to pull a pocket knife and stab the attacker, who stopped hitting him but then pulled him out of the vehicle and drove off to the east in it, San Diego Police Department Officer Robert Heims said.
Patrol personnel soon caught up with the alleged carjacker and took him into custody. The suspect’s name is Matthew Barton, according to CBS 8 News.
Both men were taken to hospitals for evaluations, Heims said.
