A transient who broke into a residence in Lakeside and knelt next to a sleeping woman’s bed before fleeing pleaded guilty today to a “hot prowl” residential burglary charge.

Shawn Barton, 24, faces up to six years in prison when he is sentenced Jan. 29.

Barton was arrested June 3, four days after the 2:50 a.m. break-in at the home on Providence Bay Court.

San Diego County sheriff’s Lt. George Calderon said the woman awoke to Barton kneeling next to her bed.

“The terrified homeowner yelled at the intruder, who then stood up and made some type of ‘growling’ noise as he fled the residence,” Calderon said in June.

Barton was initially arrested shortly after the burglary on suspicion of being drunk in public. Four days later, he was taken into custody in the 9700 block of Winter Gardens Boulevard.
