Investigators arrested a man Tuesday who a woman startled last weekend after he broke into her Lakeside home and approached her bed.

Shawn Barton, 23, is accused of residential burglary and assault with intent to commit a sex crime, authorities said. The suspect, who was arrested in the 9700 block of Winter Gardens Boulevard, is known as a transient in the Lakeside community.

He is being held on $1 million bail.

Barton was arrested three days after a woman summoned deputies from the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department Santee station to her home on Providence Bay Court in Lakeside at nearly 3 a.m. She told them she awoke to find a masked man kneeling next to her bed and when she cried out he made a sort of growling noise, then fled.

The victim gave deputies a description of the man, which aided in identifying Barton as the suspect. He was initially arrested on suspicion of being drunk in public.
