A 64-year-old motorist was in custody Friday on suspicion of striking and seriously injuring a pedestrian in the Miramar area and fleeing the scene, police said.

The pedestrian, a 44-year-old man, was working for a private contractor picking up reflectors in the middle of the road in the 7000 block of Miramar Road when he was struck by a gray Mercedes Benz shortly after 11:30 p.m. Thursday, according to San Diego police Officer Robert Heims.

Paramedics took the pedestrian to a local hospital to treat a skull fracture and bleeding in his brain, Heims said in a statement.

Officers located the suspected driver at his house and arrested him on suspicion of hit-and-run, Heims said. It was not immediately clear how police identified the suspect so quickly.
