A man accused of shooting his brother at a home in San Marcos pleaded not guilty Wednesday to a murder charge.

Fermin Olano, 45, was ordered held on $1 million bail.

The defendant called 911 to summon help for the victim about 6:15 p.m. Sunday, according to San Diego County sheriff’s Lt. John Maryon. Deputies and paramedics arrived at 1325 Granite Road and found 46-year-old Fernando Olano dead inside the residence, he said.

The motive for the shooting was unclear.

The defendant, who was arrested at the scene, faces 35 years to life in prison if convicted. He will be back in court Dec. 15 for a readiness conference and Dec. 17 for a preliminary hearing.
