A woman in custody over a hit-and-run traffic accident stole a California Highway Patrol officer’s cruiser in a Mission Bay parking lot Thursday, resulting in a road chase that prompted two non-injury law enforcement shootings and left her under arrest.
The state patrolman had the woman detained for questioning near De Anza Cove when she jumped behind the wheel of his black-and-white SUV and sped off about 2:45 p.m., according to the CHP and San Diego police.
The officer responded by firing four or five shots in the direction of the fleeing suspect, a witness told NBC7.
Officers caught up with the stolen squad car and chased it into Mission Valley, where it crashed to a halt on Qualcomm Way underneath a Friars Road overpass just after 3 p.m., SDPD spokesman Humberto Hernandez said.
A short time time later, at least one officer opened fire. The suspect was then taken into custody unharmed, police told news crews. Her name was not immediately available.
Authorities closed traffic lanes in the area into the evening hours to allow for investigation.
