A Jan. 12 trial date was set Wednesday for a La Mesa resident accused of beating a 76-year-old man in an East County road-rage dispute.
Thomas Clayton Sikes, 57, pleaded not guilty to elder abuse and assault charges stemming from the April 30 attack and was ordered to return to court Dec. 8 for a readiness conference.
Sikes — who is about 6 feet 3 inches tall and weighs 285 pounds — allegedly attacked the older man about 10 a.m. after a dispute in a parking lot in the 500 block of Fletcher Parkway in El Cajon, then fled in a red SUV.
The victim was talking on a cell phone while driving in a parking lot outside a drugstore, and that allegedly set off his attacker, authorities said. Surveillance cameras captured images of the fight, which left the victim with broken bones in his face, among other serious injuries.
The defendant, who was arrested July 24 based on an anonymous tip, faces nine years in prison if convicted, Deputy District Attorney Carlos Campbell said.
Sikes has a history of driving-related violence, according to the prosecution.
