The driver apparently lost control shortly after 5 a.m. while heading east on Aviary Parkway and crashed into some trees in the center divider east of Cormorant Drive, Carlsbad Police Lt. Mickey Williams said.
The car came to a rest in the westbound lanes and burst into flames, Williams said.
The driver sustained major burn injuries, but managed to get out of the flaming car, according to the lieutenant.
The injured driver was flown to the Burn Center at UC San Diego Medical Center as firefighters extinguished the vehicle fire, Williams said.
Williams said that although the crash remained under investigation, alcohol was a suspected factor.
Aviara Parkway was closed from Cormorant Drive and Batiquitos Drive following the crash, he said.
