A parolee-at-large fled from officers Friday when they approached him in a Hillcrest Canyon, leading them on a foot chase up and down a freeway connector, damaging a car and injuring himself before finally getting arrested.

The man, whose name was not immediately available, ran off from the patrol personnel when they contacted him in a gorge off the 1000 block of Washington Street about 10:30 a.m., according to San Diego police.

They gave chase as he ran around and dodged them on a nearby State Route 163 ramp and nearby areas, SDPD public-affairs Mark Herring said. At one point, the suspect crashed into a Mini Cooper being driven on the ramp, knocking a side mirror off of it.

The parolee managed to elude capture until shortly after 11 a.m., when officers found him and took him into custody. Prior to being booked into county jail, he was taken to Sharp Memorial Hospital for treatment of a cut he suffered during the pursuit, Herring said.
