A collision at a City Heights intersection left one man with a severed arm Wednesday and another under arrest on suspicion of drunken driving, authorities reported.
The crash at 54th Street and occurred shortly before 10:30 a.m., when the driver of a northbound Nissan truck ran a red light on 54th Street at University Avenue, according to San Diego police.
The pickup broadsided an eastbound Toyota Prius, causing it to overturn and slide across the roadway, SDPD Officer Frank Cali said.
Medics took the 56-year-old driver of the car to a trauma center in serious condition. He was likely to lose his left arm, according to police.
The 50-year-old man who had been driving the truck was arrested on suspicion of DUI and taken to a hospital for treatment of minor injuries. His name was not immediately released.
