A South Bay barber was in custody Tuesday on suspicion of slashing a customer’s throat with a straight razor without provocation, seriously injuring him.

Daniel Roberto Flores, 22, allegedly cut the 33-year-old victim’s neck repeatedly at Vic’s Barbershop in the 1200 block of Palm Avenue in Imperial Beach around 3 p.m. Monday, then walked out of the business, according to sheriff’s officials.

The victim, 33-year-old Timothy Vaughn, was taken to a hospital and admitted in critical condition, Sgt. Leonard Gurrola said. Despite the severity of his injuries, Vaughn was expected to survive.

Deputies arrested the suspect without incident several miles from his workplace later in the day, Gurrola said.

Flores was booked into San Diego Central Jail on suspicion of attempted murder. He was being held without bail pending arraignment, scheduled for Thursday afternoon.

The motive for the attack was unclear. Witnesses told investigators there was no apparent dispute between the two men prior to the attack, the sergeant said.
