McClellan-Palomar Airport in Carlsbad was back to business as usual Tuesday following a brief evacuation prompted by a backpack that a traveler inadvertently left behind.
Police officers, firefighters and sheriff’s department’s bomb squad deputies went to the airport on Palomar Airport Road shortly before 6:30 p.m. Monday in response to a report that a suspicious package was left outside the main terminal, Carlsbad Police Sgt. Jeffrey Smith said.
Authorities were initially unable to determine who was the owner of the green backpack and evacuated the terminal and The Landings restaurant, Smith said.
The backpack’s owner eventually returned to the airport and told law enforcement officers she accidentally left it after landing earlier in the day. It contained only personal items, Smith said.
The airport resumed normal operations shortly after 8 p.m. and no flights were affected, according to the sergeant.
