Sentencing scheduled Thursday for a 20-year-old Fallbrook gang member who shot a comrade after he dropped out of their gang was postponed for about six weeks.

Sergio Huerta Ramirez was convicted on Aug. 1 of premeditated attempted murder and assault with a firearm in the January 2013 shooting that occurred in the De Luz Canyon area, near Camp Pendleton. Jurors also found true an allegation that the defendant carried out the shooting for the benefit of his gang.

He faces more than 25 years to life in prison for his crimes. His sentencing is now set for Nov. 7.

The afternoon of Jan. 3, 2013, a passer-by found the victim next to his pickup, which had crashed into a fence along a rural road. She drove him to Fallbrook Hospital, where he was admitted for treatment of multiple gunshot wounds.

Authorities described the shooting as “execution style” and said that Ramirez had asked the victim for a ride, then had him pull over on the side of a road and shot him three times at close range.

The 20-something victim’s name was withheld by authorities, who put him in protective custody.
