Three people were hospitalized Thursday following a head- on crash between a car and a San Diego Gas & Electric utility truck in the San Luis Rey area of Oceanside, authorities said.

The crash on state Route 76 at Douglas Drive occurred just before 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, according to Oceanside police Officer E.S. Anderson.

A 34-year-old Oceanside man driving a 2007 Toyota Corolla east on the highway made a left turn to go north on Douglas Drive and was struck by an SDG&E utility truck, Anderson said in a statement.

Witnesses told investigators that the utility truck had the right-of-way at the time of the collision, he said.

The drivers of both vehicles were taken to Scripps La Jolla Hospital by helicopter and a passenger in the utility truck was driven in an ambulance to Tri-City Medical Center in Oceanside, according to Anderson. The extent of the drivers’ injuries was unclear but the passenger was expected to survive, he said.
