A Canadian man in his 30s was killed and two people were hospitalized Tuesday following a series of crashes at the Border Patrol checkpoint on Interstate 5 in San Clemente.
It started about 6 p.m. when a 24-year-old Camp Pendleton Marine driving a 2008 Ford F-250 northbound failed to see traffic in front of him was at a complete stop near the checkpoint, according to California Highway Patrol Officer Jim Bettencourt.
The Ford pickup crashed into the back of a 2014 BMW, killing a rear-seat passenger and sending the sedan into the back of a 2008 Toyota Tacoma driven by a 37-year-old Chino Hills man, Bettencourt said.
Also struck from behind was a 2011 Toyota Corolla driven by a 50-year- old Modesto woman.
The driver of the BMW and another passenger were airlifted to the Scripps Memorial Hospital with moderate head and neck injuries but were expected to survive, according to Bettencourt.
The deceased was identified as a 32-year-old man from Scarborough, Ontario, Canada.
Also injured in the crash was the driver of the Corolla, though her injuries were minor, Bettencourt said.
