The drivers who were killed in separate accidents Sunday and Monday have been identified.
Paul Newton, 28, lost control of his 2000 Infiniti Q30 sedan – but it was not known how he did so – on northbound Interstate 805 in Chula Vista shortly before 8 a.m. Monday, according to officials with the California Highway Patrol and the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office.
The car hit the back of the semi just south of H Street and became wedged under its trailer, authorities said. Newton died at the scene.
The wreck caused heavy congestion during the busy morning commute. The traffic persisted in the area, then at about noon, when Caltrans announced that lanes had been re-opened.
A 27-year-old driver died in a street racing crash in Mission Bay Park Sunday.
Clyde Preston Duncan was driving a 2001 Corvette and racing a black Mercedes on westbound SeaWorld Drive near Friars Road shortly after 5 p.m. Sunday, according to the Medical Examiner’s Office and San Diego police.
Duncan lost control and crashed the Corvette into a palm tree in the center median. He was killed on impact.
Duncan’s 28-year-old girlfriend, who was a passenger in the Corvette, suffered minor injuries, San Diego police Officer Robert Heims said.
The Mercedes’ driver fled after the crash, Heims said.
