A La Mesa man was fatally struck by a SUV while jaywalking in Spring Valley, a California Highway Patrol officer said.

The pedestrian, 61, was attempting to cross Broadway outside a marked crosswalk near Spring Street shortly before 9 p.m. Sunday when he walked into the path of an eastbound 2006 Ford Explorer, according to CHP Officer Kevin Pearlstein.

The SUV’s driver, a Lemon Grove man, Pearlstein said, could not avoid striking the man.  The area is west of Sweetwater Lane Community Park.

The victim was taken to Sharp Memorial Hospital and later died, the officer said.

The SUV’s driver was not injured.

Pearlstein said authorities were working to determine if the pedestrian had been under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the crash. The SUV’s driver, 46, was not impaired and was not cited in connection with the crash, he said.
