Authorities from the medical examiner’s office have released the names of two people who died at the scene of weekend accidents near Torrey Pines State Beach and on a Chula Vista freeway offramp.
Michael North of Del Mar was killed while walking between the rails south of the intersection of Carmel Valley Road and North Torrey Pines Road when a northbound Amtrak locomotive approached from behind and struck him shortly before 11:30 a.m. Sunday, according to sheriff’s officials and the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office.
“The train operator activated its horn and emergency braking system but was unable to stop before striking the victim,” Deputy Dawn Morabe said.
The train conductor told investigators North had been walking with two companions who safely moved out of the way. It was unclear why North did not do so.
In the earlier incident, Sarah Renee Alvarado, 27, was a passenger on a motorcycle whose driver lost control on the E Street off-ramp from southbound Interstate 5 shortly after 3:30 a.m. Saturday, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office and the California Highway Patrol.
The Chula Vista woman was thrown from the bike and died at the scene, according to the Medical Examiner’s Office.
The motorcyclist was hospitalized, but a report on the person’s condition was unavailable.
