Two men who were behind bars on unrelated charges have been linked to the shooting death of a man in Lakeside six years ago, a sheriff’s lieutenant said.

Destin Lee Withers, 38, and Brian Jeffrey Baldino, 29, are scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday on murder charges in the death of Mark Randolph “Randy” Vogler, according to sheriff’s Lt. Glenn Giannantonio.

Vogler was fatally shot on Feb. 11, 2008, as he walked in the 12200 block of Woodside Avenue near Shamrock Lane, according to sheriff’s officials.

Giannantonio said an “exhaustive investigation” conducted by the sheriff’s Cold Case Homicide Team, the East County Regional Gang Task Force and the District Attorney’s Office led to the identification of Withers and Baldino as suspects.

Withers is in jail for his role in killing a young mother, Denise Rodriguez, 20, whose bullet-riddled body was dumped near the Lawrence Welk Resort in Escondido in 2012.

He and another man, Jeffrey Steven McCreary, a prosecutor said then, set up “an orchestrated murder” in Rodriguez’s death. They were convicted of murder and other charges in June and are scheduled to be sentenced in November.

Jail records showed that Baldino was being held in the George Bailey Detention Facility on suspicion of vehicle theft and possession of a controlled substance. His release date on those lesser charges is listed as July 6, 2015.

Anyone with information on the Vogler slaying was asked to call the sheriff’s department at (858) 974-2321 or after hours at (858) 565-5200. Witnesses also may call San Diego Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477.
