Update 12:10 p.m. Thursday Aug. 21.
A crash on a La Jolla roadway Thursday left a person trapped inside an overturned vehicle.
At least two vehicles were involved in the accident on Avenida la Reina near Nautilus Street shortly after 9:30 a.m., according to San Diego police and fire officials. The scene is near La Jolla High and Muirlands Middle schools.
An SUV and BMW sedan collided and medics took the three people who had been in the sport-utility vehicle – a woman and her two children – to Sharp Memorial and Rady Children’s hospitals with apparently minor injuries, fire spokesman Lee Swanson said.
To free the other driver from the wreckage, emergency crews had to cut open the roof and undercarriage of his car, which wound up on its side in the street. The man was taken to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla for treatment of moderately serious trauma.
Complicating the rescue was the fact that the BMW came to rest across a set of downed electrical lines, Swanson said.
Initially, the fire department reported via Twitter that four patients were being aided at the scene.
San Diego Gas & Electric personnel were asked to make repairs, 10News reported, also via Twitter. The utility’s website, however, did not show any outages in the area.
The wreck was blocking westbound Nautilus for a time, San Diego police Sgt. Ray Battrick said.
