The men pulled into the San Onofre-area inspection station in a 2008 Chrysler Sebring about 2 a.m., according to USBP public affairs.

A dog alerted officers to the contraband, and officers seized 19 vacuum-sealed packages of methamphetamine hidden in the gas tank and another 20 in rocker panels.   The 33-year-old driver and his 22-year-old passenger, both Mexican citizens, were arrested. The younger man lacked a permit required for traveling farther than 25 miles from the border, officials said. Their names were withheld.

The two men and the drugs were turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration officers. Border Patrol agents impounded the car.
