An elderly man from Carlsbad died in a single-vehicle crash off Interstate 5 near Camp Pendleton, authorities said Thursday.

Nicholas Anthony Dicarlo, 69, lost control of his southbound 2014 Lexus IS 350 north of Harbor Drive shortly after 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, apparently due to a blown tire, according to the California Highway Patrol and the county Medical Examiner’s Office.

The sedan veered off the freeway and crashed into a tree, pinning Dicarlo in it, authorities said.

Emergency crews pried the driver out of the wreckage, and he was taken to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla.

Dicarlo was pronounced dead about two hours after the crash, CHP and Medical Examiner’s officials said.
