Lifeguard divers on Friday recovered the body of a 20-year- old man killed in a boat crash at the El Capitan Reservoir that also claimed the life of his companion.
The discovery in the man-made lake off El Monte Road in the Lakeside area occurred about 12:30 p.m., roughly 17 hours after the accident occurred, said Lee Swanson, a spokesman for the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.
The county Medical Examiner’s Office was called in to take custody of the body.
“The team anticipates continuing to dive through the afternoon to search for debris evidence,” Swanson said.
The victims, whose names were withheld pending family notification, were aboard a drifting vessel that was struck by a speeding boat in the City of San Diego-owned reservoir off El Monte Road in the Cleveland National Forest around 7:20 p.m. Thursday, according to San Diego Police Sgt. David E. Jennings. Both vessels capsized.
Jennings said the two occupants of the speeding boat suffered numerous minor lacerations and were hospitalized following the crash.
A 21-year-old man from the other boat was pronounced dead at the scene and his companion could not immediately be located, according to the sergeant. The multi-agency search was suspended overnight, authorities said.
San Diego police are conducting the investigation into the crash because it happened in a city-owned reservoir, although it is about 30 miles northeast of downtown, authorities said.
