A woman found dead of an apparent suicide in National City early Tuesday was the half-sister of actress Drew Barrymore, according to a broadcast report.
10News.com identified the dead woman as Jessica Barrymore, 47, and cited unnamed sources in naming her as the popular actress’ half-sister.
The station said the victim’s body was found in a vehicle parked across a driveway in the 900 block of Hoover Avenue around 6 a.m. The report cited witnesses as saying they had seen the car parked there for hours with the woman inside, but had thought she was waiting for someone.
The residents who found the victim said they realized something was wrong when they saw her reclined in the vehicle with no pulse, and pills visible on the front seat.
The station said the San Diego County Medical Examiner confirmed the identity and birthdate, July 31, 1966, of the victim.
Drew Barrymore issued a statement to People magazine Wednesday saying she was sorry for the death, though she was not intimate with Jessica Barrymore.
“Although I only met her briefly, I wish her and her loved ones as much peace as possible, and I’m so incredibly sorry for their loss,” the actress said in the statement.
Jessica and Drew Barrymore’s father, John Drew Barrymore Jr., had four children from several marriages. Jessica Barrymore’s mother, Nina Wayne, was a television actress in the 1960s.
10News.com quoted sources as saying the victim was the daughter of actor John Drew Barrymore and lived in northern San Diego County, and worked at a Petco outlet. People also reported she had attended the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts.
One former co-worker told the station she had an “awesome sense of humor and always had a smile for you.”
