Authorities on Friday publicly identified the 37-year-old man killed this week in a shooting at an apartment complex in an unincorporated area near El Cajon.

Kevin McCalla was found lying on a sidewalk in the Pepper Creek apartment complex at 1475 Graves Ave. about 8:45 p.m. Wednesday by deputies dispatched to investigate reports of gunfire and a disturbance, said sheriff’s Lt. Jeffrey Duckworth.

Duckworth said investigators think McCalla was a “temporary resident” of El Cajon.

McCalla suffered gunshot wounds and was unresponsive and without a pulse, Duckworth said. Paramedics attempted to revive the victim, but he died at the scene.

Sheriff’s investigators did not immediately identify any persons or vehicles of interest.

Anyone with information on the shooting was asked to call the sheriff’s department at (858) 974-2321, after hours at (858) 565-5200 or Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477.
