Authorities have identified the young man fatally struck by a pickup truck as he attempted to cross a street in Mission Bay Park over the weekend.
Andre Hoang Huynh, 18, of Lemon Grove, and three companions were trying to get to a car parked on the east side of East Mission Bay Drive shortly before 10:30 p.m. Saturday, according to the county Medical Examiner’s Office and police.
As the group stopped in the middle of the street to allow traffic to pass, Huynh was struck by a southbound Chevrolet pickup truck, authorities said.
Huynh was taken to UC San Diego Medical Center where he was declared dead shortly after 11 p.m. Saturday, according to the Medical Examiner’s Office.
Locally, officials have been alarmed by the rise in deaths of pedestrians.
San Diego and Los Angeles were among the 10 U.S. cities with the highest number of pedestrians killed in traffic accidents in 2012, federal transportation officials have said.
In addition, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. 32 percent of the deaths happen from 8 p.m. to midnight.
