A pedestrian was struck and killed on Interstate 5 early Thursday by a driver who allegedly fled following the crash but was later arrested, authorities said.

The driver of a Ford Focus struck the woman shortly after midnight in the freeway’s southbound lanes north of the connector road to state Route 163, according to the California Highway Patrol. Her name was not immediately available.

A man later called the CHP and said he had been involved in the crash, according to CHP Officer Tommy Doerr. Sandro Garcia, 32,  was arrested at his San Diego residence on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and felony hit and run shortly after 3:30 a.m..

Two southbound lanes were temporarily closed from First Avenue to state Route 163 along with the connector road to the highway, prompting the issuance of a SigAlert, but the CHP reported the roadway as cleared at about 2:10 a.m.
