Police are seeking a gunman who fatally shot a 36-year-old man outside a National City restaurant Tuesday after watching a televised World Cup match.

Police officers dispatched to the Rincon Del Mar restaurant in the 300 block of Highland Avenue near East Division Street shortly after 5:30 p.m. found the victim on a sidewalk suffering from an apparent gunshot wound, according to National City Police.

The man was fatally injured during a fight that broke out amid a watch party for the Mexico-Brazil World Cup match, according to broadcast reports. The altercation spilled out into the street where shots were fired, police told reporters.

“They say that they … hit him with the bottle and they broke the bottle on the back of this guy but after that, you know, they started shooting … four shots ….They shot him in the left side,” witness Patricia Aguayo told 10News.

Paramedics took the wounded man to UCSD Medical Center in Hillcrest where he died from his injuries, according to National City police. His name was withheld pending family notification.

Authorities said the suspect escaped following the shooting. A suspect description was not immediately available.

Anyone with information on the shooting was asked to call police at (619) 336-4411, ext. 0.
