A fire Saturday in one unit of a two-story, multi-unit apartment building at 2185 Chatsworth Blvd. near Voltaire Street caused severe damage and sent three people, one a police officer, to a local hospital for treatment.
A San Diego Fire-Rescue (SDFR) dispatcher said the call for the two- alarm fire came in at 2:36 p.m.
“The fire was knocked down at 2:59 p.m.,” the dispatcher said.
Lee Swanson, SDFR spokesman, said there was an unconfirmed report of an explosion in the apartment building. Swanson said there were also initial reports of a woman trapped on the second floor, but that was disproved with a subsequent search of the entire building.
“The fire was in one apartment on the second floor,” said Swanson of the structure which houses at least 25 mostly studio apartment units. “There was heavy fire damage to that unit, and smoke damage to the unit above it, as well as to other adjoining units.”
Swanson said three people suffered injuries during the blaze.
“The person in the apartment with the fire suffered some burns and was taken to a burn center for treatment,” he said.
Swanson said a police officer, and another woman in the apartment building, suffered from smoke inhalation and were also taken to a hospital for treatment.
There was no estimate of damages.
The cause of the fire was under investigation.
