Updated 5 p.m. Wednesday, with new details throughout.

An elderly man was found dead Wednesday in his car, which had plunged off Interstate 8 and into a rocky gorge in the far southeastern reaches of San Diego County.

A passing truck driver spotted the wrecked 2013 Ford Taurus upside-down in the ravine just west of Carrizo Gorge in the Jacumba area about 10 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.

Emergency crews found the body of the victim, 85, a Winterhaven resident, inside the wrecked sedan off I-8. His identity was withheld pending family notification.

Investigators determined that the car had drifted off the eastbound side of I-8, careened down the embankment and hit a boulder before overturning, CHP public-affairs Officer Kevin Pearlstein said.

It was unclear when the accident occurred.
