Authorities released the name Monday of an octogenarian who was fatally injured along with her husband when his out-of-control pickup truck struck them in the driveway of their El Cerrito-area home.
Setsuko Yada, 80, was run over about 9 p.m. Sunday as her 87-year-old spouse was trying to park the vehicle in front of their house in the 4200 block of West Overlook Drive, according to San Diego police.
The man then got out to check on Yada and was hit by the still-rolling truck, SDPD Officer Dino Delimitros said.
The husband, whose name was withheld pending family notification, died at the scene. Medics took Yada to a hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries a short time later.
The two were backing the Toyota pickup truck into the driveway of their home, with the wife driving and her husband standing behind the vehicle watching her, according to Delimitros.
“The truck jumped, gained speed rapidly and knocked over the husband,” he said. “The woman got out to check on him and the truck rolled over her. She died at the scene,” Delimitros said.
The husband was transported to a hospital, where he died from his injuries, according to the officer.
The accident remained under investigation, Delimitros said. It seemed as though the woman panicked and took her foot off the brake without putting the truck in park, he said.
After the incident, the truck came to a stop, “part in the driveway and part on the landscaping,” according to Delimitros.
