A wildfire briefly threatened homes on a Lakeside-area hillside Wednesday, until crews were able to begin gaining control of the flames, though some residents were evacuated.
The non-injury blaze erupted shortly before 5 p.m. off Olde Highway 80 in Lakeside, closing the highway between Las Coches Road and Main Street, according to fire officials.
The flames moved toward mobile homes and other residences but caused no reported structural damage, fire department spokeswoman Monica Zech said.
The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department said that by about 7:35 p.m., Lakeside evacuates were being allowed to return home and that the shelter at El Capitan High was closed.
Within 90 minutes, ground crews were making progress toward extinguishing the blaze, she said. No air support was available for the effort due to the array of other fires burning across the San Diego region,
