San Diego Harbor Police rescued a man and woman who were abandoned by a smuggler in the ocean more than a mile off Imperial Beach.
The incident occurred last week when a jet ski was observed crossing from Mexico. A Harbor Police boat was called in, and the jet ski operator abandoned the two passengers in the ocean and fled back to Mexico.
Harbor Police found a 28-year old man and a 25-year-old woman, both of whom were showing signs of hypothermia.
Emergency medical services met the police boat as it arrived at the dock. The couple was transported to a medical facility for further evaluation and treatment.
During questioning both the man and the woman admitted they were Mexican nationals illegally present in the U.S. and were taken to a nearby Border Patrol station for processing.
