One of two suspected thieves died at the scene. The other ran off and sped out of the area in a white sedan, possibly a Mercedes-Benz. Witnesses described him as a roughly 6-foot, 190-pound black man in a blue hooded sweat shirt, homicide Lt. Manuel Del Toro told reporters.

Medics took the wounded security officer to Scripps Mercy Hospital for treatment of a bullet wound to the abdomen. He underwent surgery and was listed in stable condition, the lieutenant said.
