A 55-year-old National City woman was hospitalized Friday after officers rescued her from her burning home, police said.

Officers arrived at the detached studio home in the 1900 block of I Avenue about 10:30 p.m. Thursday and found the woman was trapped inside the burning residence, according to a police statement.

They forced the front door open and brought the woman out to safety, using fire extinguishers to help control the flames until firefighters arrived a short time later, police said.

Paramedics took her to a local hospital to treat her for smoke inhalation and minor burns to her hands, police said, adding that no officers were injured in the rescue.

The cause of the fire was under investigation, though police said preliminary evidence suggested it was sparked by a burning candle.
