A student at Mission Bay High School was taken into custody Friday for bringing an Airsoft gun to campus, police said.

Officers were called to the campus at 2475 Grand Ave. around 8:15 a.m., according to San Diego police Officer Frank Cali.
Officers were alerted to the situation by a parent who received a text from his or her child earlier in the morning, sharing that someone had brought a gun to school, Cali said.
The student with the Airsoft gun was quickly found and taken into custody, he said. The motive was unclear.
Officers surrounded the classroom and made contact with the suspect student. Police then discovered the student was carrying an airsoft pellet gun. He was detained by school police. After he is interviewed, police will decide the consequences for the student. His parents will also be contacted.
According to a recent story in The Press Democrat of Santa Rosa: “Airsoft guns are usually battery powered and shoot plastic BBs. They are popular mostly among young men who play simulated war games at indoor facilities as well as outdoors.”
“It really is a toy gun,” a local shop owner was quoted as saying. “It just looks real.”
