A man accused of beating his ex-wife to death with a brick in Chula Vista pleaded not guilty Thursday to a murder charge.
Rand Eugene Huffman, 64, of San Gabriel, was jailed on suspicion of attempted murder on Feb. 26 – the same day his ex, Martha Huffman, 63, was hospitalized after being beaten in her home in the 100 block of Twin Oaks Circle.
“It’s a highly disturbing and sad case,” Chula Vista police Lt. Lon Turner told reporters on Monday. “Our hearts are with Martha’s friends and family.”
The former couple divorced more than 30 years ago. Their son who lived with his mother and had a recent dispute with his father over a property deal, Turner said, adding the son had taken out a restraining order against his father.
The defendant remains in custody without bail. A readiness conference is scheduled June 16.
