The deputies were responding to a report of a suspicious person when a man attacked one of them, prompting another to open fire to stop the assault, La Mesa police Lt. Angela DeSarro told reporters.

Medics took both wounded men to hospitals. The deputy was expected to recover, according to sheriff’s officials. The suspect, Allan David Riley, 55, was admitted to a trauma center for treatment of a gunshot wound to the abdomen and was expected to recover.

The men’s names were withheld.

Officers shut down traffic lanes around the gas station to allow detectives to gather evidence.
